Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640)

Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640)

Beautiful set of two consecutive plates (Planches VII & VIII ) from the rare, luxurious 1877 portfolio edition La Bible de Pierre-Paul Rubens, published by Librairie Européenne C. Muquardt (Brussels). This premium set contains 2 consecutive plates of the portfolio, featuring following Old Testament scenes: Planche VII: Marriage de la Vierge, Plance VIII Annonciation Engraved after Rubens by Bolswert (1580 –1633). These prints are high-quality, late 19th-century photogravures (heliogravures) printed on heavy paper with exceptionally wide margins. They masterfully reproduce the rare 17th-century masterpiece copper engravings executed by the top Flemish master engravers from the School of Rubens. Because they are heliogravures, they capture the deep blacks, subtle shading, and intense contrast (chiaroscuro) of the original plates with incredible accuracy. In very nice, clean antique condition. The paper is bright and remarkably fresh, without foxing. Provenance:A photograph of the original 1877 title page of the portfolio La Bible de Pierre-Paul Rubens is included in the lot photos as proof of authenticity and provenance.

Estimation:€150
