PATSY ANGUBURRA LULPUNDA Worrorra language, c.1898 - 2000 Wandjina, 2000 ochre on canvas 63 x 52 cm bears catalogue number 14066 verso PROVENANCE Created at the Pensioner Unit, Warmun Community, Western Australia Peter Elliot Collection, New South Wales Coo-ee Art Gallery, New South Wales, Cat No. 14066 Private Collection, New South Wales Accompanied by original certificate of authenticity from Coo-ee Art EXHIBITED Patsy Anguburra Lulpunda, 2 May - 6 June 2009, Coo-ee Art Gallery, Sydney, NSW Patsy Lulpunda, also known by her Wororra name Anguburra, was a senior Wororra woman whose life spanned a period of profound cultural and social change in the Kimberley. Her name, Anguburra, refers to a native honeybee renowned for producing particularly sweet honey. During the final decade of her life, Lulpunda lived on the Prince Regent River near Mowanjum, where she continued to make traditional objects including hair belts and stone axes. Remarkably, Lulpunda did not begin painting until she was around 100 years old. Her first works were created in 1998 while visiting renowned Kimberley artist, custodian and storyteller Jack Dale, during a painting workshop at his home. She subsequently participated in several workshops with Dale, producing a small and distinctive body of work before her death at approximately 102 years of age. In this work, Lulpunda depicts a Wandjina, the powerful ancestral beings associated with the creation of Country, seasonal rains and fertility across the north-west Kimberley. Characterised by the distinctive haloed head, large eyes and absence of a mouth, Wandjina imagery belongs to one of the continent's oldest continuing painting traditions and remains central to the cultural and ceremonial life of Wororra, Wunambal and Ngarinyin peoples. Created during the brief final chapter of an extraordinary life, Lulpunda's Wandjina paintings carry the authority of knowledge acquired over generations. Translated here onto canvas, the ancestral image connects an ancient visual tradition with a remarkable late-life painting practice, affirming Lulpunda's enduring relationship with Wororra Country and culture. © PATSY ANGUBURRA LULPUNDA / Copyright Agency, 2026
