A Black & Decker valve seal tester (often referred to as a valve tester or vacuum valve tester) from the 1950s is an iconic tool in automotive history. The principle: The device works on vacuum or air pressure. A rubber cup or adapter is placed over the valve port (inlet or exhaust). The measurement: By manually pumping vacuum or using compressed air, the mechanic could see on an analog gauge (pressure gauge) whether the pressure remained steady.
