René Magritte (1898-1967) René Magritte was born in 1898 in Lessines near Tournai, in the French-speaking part of Belgium. He grew up in Châtelet, near Charleroi. Studying from 1916 to 1918 at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, he met the Bourgeois brothers, Victor and Pierre, as well as painter Pierre-Louis Flouquet. Magritte collaborated in 1919 on the inaugural issue of the magazine Au Volant, edited by the Bourgeois brothers. After a year of military service, Magritte worked as a draftsman, mainly for a Brussels wallpaper manufacturer and, freelance, created posters, advertising material, and exhibition stands. In 1926 he painted his first recognized surrealist work, Le Jockey Perdu. In the same year, he signed, with other Belgian surrealists, the pamphlets titled The Married to the Eiffel Tower and Two Disgraces. Magritte stayed from 1927 to 1930 in Le Perreux-sur-Marne, in the Paris region, where he met Hans Arp, André Breton, Salvador Dalí, Paul Éluard, and Joan Miró. His provocative article The Words and the Images was published in 1929 in the final issue of La Révolution Surréaliste, a year after the realization of his painting Le Masque Vide. Parastone has, for almost 50 years, successfully created decorative objects, some of timeless classic beauty and others more aligned with prevailing trends. The museum-piece collection presented under the name Mouseion constitutes an important part of the collection.
