Panel - Wood - China - Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) - Wall...

Authentic antique Chinese wall panel with a very refined and openwork high relief. The handmade woodcarving dates from the late Qing dynasty, around 1880 to 1900. This kind of panel has traditionally come from renowned carving regions such as Chaozhou or Dongyang and originally formed part of a larger traditional piece of furniture, such as a canopy bed or a temple cabinet. The dynamic depiction shows a detailed battle scene with soldiers and riders on horseback around a traditional Chinese building, a scene presumably inspired by historical or mythological tales such as the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. The object is crafted from a sturdy native Asian wood species, presumably camphor or elm wood, which is excellent at resisting splitting. The front of the panel is beautifully finished with gold leaf and gold lacquer, giving a rich and glossy appearance. To protect the wood from moisture and warping, the back, as well as the deeper inner faces, were at the time completely covered with a thick, traditional red lacquer layer. On the back there is also a subsequently mounted metal eye, allowing the panel to be hung directly and easily as a standalone art object on the wall. Regarding dimensions, the panel is compact and handy with a height of 27 centimeters, a width of 10 centimeters, and a notable thickness of 3.8 centimeters. The total weight is 250 grams. The overall condition is solid with a very beautiful, time-worn character. There are natural age-related and wear marks visible in the gold finish and the lacquer layer, which underscore the piece’s authenticity. It should be noted that, due to the passage of time, there are a few small damages; for example, the spear in the hand of the top rider is broken and the spear tip is missing, and the tail of the top horse also shows an old fracture. Nevertheless, this remains a beautiful and characterful piece of Chinese artisanal craft with an impressive three-dimensional depth. Dimensions: 27x10x3.8 cm Weight: 250 g
