Panel - South India - Carved wood - Shiva and Parvati...

Magnificent and important high-relief architectural panel in dense solid exotic hardwood (very likely teak or rosewood), originating from South India (Tamil Nadu region). This element originally adorned the interior structure of a Hindu temple or the flanks of a ceremonial procession chariot (Ratha) used during major religious festivals. The sculpture masterfully represents the major divine couple of Hinduism: the god Shiva and his wife the goddess Parvati. Iconographic and stylistic details: The deities are depicted in the traditional tribhanga pose, full of grace and movement. They wear tall ceremonial conical hairstyles shaped like a crown (Karanda Mukuta), as well as richly carved jewelry (necklaces, bracelets and belts). The goddess Parvati delicately holds a lotus bud in her right hand, a universal symbol of purity and fertility. The top of the panel is beautifully decorated with foliage motifs and stylized vegetal scrolls, typical of South Indian sacred art. Presence of a natural desiccation crack on the left side at the back, quite normal for old wood, not affecting the piece’s solidity. Some minor signs of wear (notably on the nose of the male figure) which confirm its authenticity and history. Back: The reverse presents a magnificent, untreated raw wood, showing the traces of original hand sawing and a beautiful natural oxidation. A modern metal mounting system is already fixed to the back for immediate wall hanging. An elegant and spiritual gallery piece, perfect for Asian art collectors or enthusiasts of high-end interior decoration. 19th century or early 20th century.
