Pair of Chinese Ming Dynasty Copper Alloy Figures

East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 15th to 17th century CE. A finely modeled pair of Chinese copper alloy figures depicting standing attendants, each rendered with individualized posture, gesture, and expression. One figure stands with hands clasped at the chest in a gesture of respectful attention, while the other adopts a more animated stance, arms bent and garments flowing, suggesting movement and hierarchical distinction. Their robes are articulated with incised folds and layered hems, conveying both textile weight and social status. The figures are cast in dark copper alloy with a smooth, worn surface that enhances their sculptural presence. Facial features are softly modeled yet expressive, with rounded cheeks, gently smiling mouths, and carefully defined eyes that lend the pair a quiet sense of humanity. Apertures and structural details suggest that they may have functioned as holders for incense or joss sticks, integrating sculptural form with ritual purpose. Size of larger: 2" W x 4.6" H (5.1 cm x 11.7 cm) Together, these figures embody the Ming dynasty preference for narrative pairing and balanced composition. They offer a glimpse into late imperial Chinese devotional or domestic practice, where craftsmanship, symbolism, and everyday ritual converged in enduring metal form. Item # 196241
