Ottoman sailor, Turkish. Signed. Orientalist School. 19th century.

Descriptio Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 55 x 68 cm. The scene unfolds on a boat floating on a choppy sea near the coast, where a group of six figures share space and expression. The central figure is a bare-chested Ottoman sailor with a muscular physique, standing and maneuvering an oar as he steers the vessel. Beside him, a young woman with a serene face and European peasant dress becomes the focal point, accompanied by other female figures and a reclining man who observes with a contemplative expression. The composition balances the movement of the water with the triangular arrangement of the bodies, generating dynamism without losing the narrative focus. The sea, rendered with fluid brushstrokes and blue-green tones, reinforces the vibrant atmosphere of the coastal scene, framed by distant cliffs and dense skies. The painting reflects the aesthetic of 19th-century Romantic Orientalism, where the exotic and the popular merge with a theatrical and sentimental approach. The work demonstrates technical skill in the characterization of the figures, the anatomical study, and the interplay of light on the bodies and their surroundings. This idealized vision of the Ottoman world evokes the European taste for the picturesque and the representation of Mediterranean cultures through a romantic lens. Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, no specialized technical testing has been performed.
