Reference: Krause, Chester L., and Clifford Mishler, Standard Catalog of World Coins, 1701–1800, Turkey, KM 504. Selim III sought to renew Ottoman power through the Nizam-ı Cedid, or “New Order”, creating an army trained along European lines and reforming state finances. His reign unfolded amid wars with Russia and Austria, Napoleon’s invasion of Egypt and growing unrest in the provinces. Opposition to his reforms united threatened interests, including the Janissaries. A rebellion deposed him in 1807, but his programme helped prepare the ground for later Ottoman modernisation.
