Ottoman Empire. Mahmud II (1808-1839 AD). 20 Para (Silver, 18 mm, 0.9 g). Obv: Tughra of Mahmud II within a circle; border of interlaced loops, each enclosing a rosette of pellets. Rev: ضرب في قسطنطينية / ١٢٢٣ ("Struck in Kostantiniye, 1223", the accession year). Regnal year above. Same border of loops with rosettes. Reference: Krause & Mishler, Standard Catalog of World Coins, KM 583. Mahmud II came to the Ottoman throne in 1808 after the deposition of Selim III and Mustafa IV. In 1826 he destroyed the Janissary corps and began building a modern army. The years of this type saw the Ottoman fleet lost at Navarino in 1827 and war with Russia in 1828-1829, ended by the Treaty of Adrianople. Repeated debasement financed these struggles, keeping silver types short-lived. His centralising reforms prepared the Tanzimat, proclaimed under his son Abdulmejid in 1839.
