Oskar Kokoschka (1886–1980) “Self-portrait with Drypoint” (Autoportrait à la pointe sèche) — 1970 Original drypoint engraving, signed in pencil by Oskar Kokoschka and numbered LV/LXXV in Roman numerals. Monogrammed and dated 1970 in the plate. This work is the famous “Self-portrait with Drypoint” (“Autoportrait à la pointe sèche”), created by Oskar Kokoschka in 1970 and referenced under number 469 in the Wingler/Welz catalogue raisonné. The engraving was created on 17 August 1970 in Villeneuve, then printed by Hermann Steidle at the Folkwang-Offizin in Essen. It was published by Edition de Beauclair, in Frankfurt, as the original engraving accompanying the deluxe edition of “Bild, Sprache und Schrift,” a Kokoschka text devoted to his conception of gaze, of art, and of creation. The deluxe edition included only 75 copies numbered in Roman numerals, printed on handmade Japanese paper and signed and numbered in pencil by Kokoschka. The present copy bears the number LV/LXXV. The composition depicts Kokoschka himself, holding the drypoint that gives the work its title. The graphic treatment, energetic and very personal, fully corresponds to the importance the artist attached to drawing and engraving in his oeuvre. The engraving itself measures about 20 × 29.3 cm. It is presented matted and in an aluminum frame of about 42 × 51 cm, professionally produced and equipped with UV-protective glass. This is an original graphic work by Kokoschka, and not a reproduction: the artist himself signed and numbered this copy. References: Wingler/Welz 469 Spindler 40,50 Oskar Kokoschka is one of the major Austrian Expressionist artists of the 20th century, both painter, draftsman and engraver. This late engraving constitutes a particularly interesting self-portrait by its personal character and by its belonging to a limited luxury edition of only 75 copies.
