Important and wide Italian treatise on experimental physics from the early years of the twentieth century, compiled by Oreste Murani, professor at the Regio Istituto Tecnico Superiore and at the Istituto Tecnico C. Cattaneo in Milan. The work offers a broad exposition of classical physics and its applications, with particular attention to scientific instruments, laboratory apparatus, and demonstrative experiments. CONTENTS Volume I – Mechanics of solids and fluids, Acoustics, Thermal energy. 682 pages numbered, plus an index in roman numerals up to XX. Illustrated with 530 engravings stated. Deals with mechanics, hydrostatics, hydrodynamics, acoustic phenomena, heat, heat engines and the principles of thermodynamics, including entropy. Volume II – Optics and Electricity. 792 pages numbered, plus an index in roman numerals up to XXIII. Illustrated with 662 engravings stated. Includes geometric and physical optics, spectroscopy, electricity, magnetism, electromagnetism, electrical machines and industrial applications. Particularly interesting is the discussion of the early developments of radiotelegraphy, with references to Hertz’s experiments, to Tesla’s devices, to the coherer, to the experiments of Righi and to Guglielmo Marconi’s wireless telegraph. Numerous illustrations depict scientific instruments and machines, including Wimshurst electrostatic machine, optical devices, acoustic instruments, electrical generators and electromagnetic equipment. CONDITION Complete work in two volumes, both with title pages, text and indexes preserved. Present are the final pages of both volumes. Bindings uniform in light cloth, neat and well preserved. Interior generally in good condition, with normal yellowing of the paper, some foxing and occasional stains due to time. There are some handwritten pencil annotations, visible in the photographs. Title pages preserved and illustrations generally sharp. Please study the photographs carefully, which are an integral part of the description of the conservation state. HISTORICAL-SCIENTIFIC INTEREST A representative work of physics teaching in Italy at the beginning of the twentieth century, in the transitional period between late nineteenth-century classical physics and the new applications of electricity and electromagnetism.
