The artist achieves notable anatomical solidity and warmth in the skin tones through well-structured brushstrokes, highlighting the contrast between the yellow clothing and collar and the vibrant backgrounds. In the back, the composition abstractly and iconically integrates the colors and shapes of the Cuban flag — its blue and white stripes and the upper red triangle — framing the subject's head. The work conveys a deep sense of joy, dignity, patriotism, and pride in Afro-Cuban heritage.
