Antique Norwegian silver brooch by Emil Høye (1875–1958), executed in 830 silver and dating from around 1930. The elongated brooch depicts a Viking ship on stylized waves. The ship is intricately worked with a dragon head at the prow, a raised sail and a row of round shields along the side. The waves are also strongly stylized, ending in graceful curls at both ends. The design aligns with the Norwegian Viking Revival / dragon style, in which motifs from the Viking Age and medieval Scandinavian art were reinterpreted. Emil Høye is regarded as an important Norwegian goldsmith and designer, who played a major role in early 20th-century Norwegian Jugendstil. On the back the brooch is extensively hallmarked with 830S, the EH master mark of Emil Høye, REG.NGF and an N in a square cartouche. The N-cartouche was registered in Norway in 1929 by the manufacturers’ group within the Norwegian association of gold- and silversmith suppliers. This means the brooch could not have been made before 1929. Based on these hallmarks and the design, it is dated to around 1930. The REG.NGF designation refers to registration with Norges Gullsmedforbund, the Norwegian goldsmiths’ federation. The brooch is in good antique condition, especially considering its age. There are light signs of use but no troubling damage. The detailing of the ship and waves is still beautifully preserved and the hallmarks are clearly legible.
