Type of jewel: Diamond crescent brooch. Condition: In well-preserved condition, especially given this brooch’s age. Style: Late Victorian. Era: Circa 1890. Theme: A crescent moon. Material: Silver front with an 18K gold back, pin and catch; the gold was touchstone tested. Technique: Silver on gold, a traditional construction combining a silver diamond-setting surface with a gold backing. Extra information: The pin catch is a later addition. Diamonds: Twenty-eight rose-cut and senaille-cut diamonds, graduated along the crescent with smaller accents along its outer edge. Rose-cut and senaille-cut diamonds are traditionally described by number rather than by estimated weight, colour or clarity grades. Their varying and often irregular depth prevents reliable weight estimation while mounted, while formal colour and clarity grading is not customary in the trade for diamonds of these antique cutting styles. All diamonds in this brooch were individually tested with the Magilabs' EXA Natural Diamond Detector and identified as natural diamonds.
