No Reserve - Large Antique American Hooked Rug, early 20th century

Curated collection of antique, vintage and modern rugs No Reserve - Large Antique American Hooked Rug, early 20th century Size: 12 ft x 8 ft 8 in (3.66 m x 2.64 m) Provenance: Collection of late notable London and New York dealer A remarkably large American hooked rug, notable for a scale far beyond that of the smaller domestic examples ordinarily encountered. Creating a rug of these dimensions required considerable planning, labor and control of the overall design. American hooked rugs evolved from practical household production into a distinctive form of textile folk art. Their appeal lies in the directness of the maker’s hand, the transformation of everyday materials and the subtle irregularities that distinguish handmade work from commercial manufacture. Its substantial size gives this example particular decorative importance and makes it suitable for a large country house, loft, or informal contemporary interior.
