Her works, including the iconic “Nana” figures, challenged traditional notions of femininity and focused on the role of women in art and society. Saint Phalle was a central figure of Nouveau Réalisme, a movement that dissolved the boundaries between art and life and critically examined social structures. Saint Phalle’s early works, such as her “shooting pictures” (“Tirs”) from the 1960s, marked a radical departure from conventional painting. By shooting at canvases filled with pigment packs and objects, she created art that was both accidental and violent. This act recalls Dadaism and Surrealism, particularly artists like Marcel Duchamp and Jackson Pollock. While Pollock’s “Action Painting” introduced physical movement into painting, Saint Phalle brought destruction as a creative act into art. Her work reflects an engagement with themes such as aggression, power, and the desire to break through patriarchal structures in which art was often confined. Her “Nana” figures, which emerged from the mid-1960s, became her signature and symbolize a celebration of femininity and joie de vivre. These monumental, colorful, rounded female figures represented self-confidence and freedom and questioned traditional, often idealized or sexualized representations of the female body. In dialogue with feminist artists such as Louise Bourgeois and Yayoi Kusama, Saint Phalle created a new visual language that presented femininity as strong and independent. While Bourgeois often explored the psychological depths of the feminine, Saint Phalle focused on the powerful, liberated woman who takes public space for herself. Saint Phalle’s monumental projects, notably the “Tarot Garden” in Tuscany, Italy, stand in direct comparison with the works of Antoni Gaudí and Jean Tinguely. The Tarot Garden, inspired by the symbols of the Tarot, presents a fantastical, walkable world of gigantic sculptures that radically combine architecture and sculpture. Similar to Gaudí’s Park Güell or Tinguely’s kinetic sculptures, Saint Phalle opened a new access to art with this project, actively involving the viewer and erasing the boundary between art and everyday life. Her close collaboration with Jean Tinguely, who was her partner and often collaborator, showed how both artists pursued a shared vision of art as playful, provocative, and accessible to everyone. Besides her work in public spaces, Saint Phalle was also a pioneer of feminist art and openly challenged the patriarchal structures that often marginalized women in art. Her sculptures, which depicted the female body in all its diversity and power, reflect the demand for equality and emancipation. In this sense, she is closely linked to artists like Judy Chicago, whose work The Dinner Party also engages with feminist themes and celebrates the female body. Both artists used their art to raise awareness of the role of women in society and to revolutionize the art world. In summary, Niki de Saint Phalle remains a key figure in modern art, whose works significantly influenced the feminist movement and conceptual sculpture. Her connections to artists such as Jean Tinguely, Louise Bourgeois, and Antoni Gaudí, along with her radical approach to form and meaning of the female body, made her a pioneer whose work continues to exert a powerful influence today.
