NEWS, No. 1 — THE LOWEST RUNG OF THE IMPERIAL LADDER KLENCK, Paul. News. No. 1. The Lowest Rung of the Imperial Ladder. Paris, [circa 1870–1871]. Colored satirical lithograph depicting Napoleon III as a humble porter or laborer, with a long pole on his shoulder. Signed P. Klenck. The composition ironically contrasts the former emperor with his new status following the fall of the regime. A few foxing spots and minor signs of wear; an old annotation “p. 99” in the upper margin.
