He came from a prominent family originally from Wageningen. Several family members held important social positions, including mayor, alderman, lawyer, mint master and military roles. The Van Brienen family coat of arms featured a unicorn, which Johan van Brienen also used as his personal mint mark. This symbol is recognizably present on the offered ducat. In 1695 Johan van Brienen resigned. In February of that year he was honorably discharged. The Van Brienen family was incorporated into the gentry in 1817 and elevated to the nobility. Lady Maria Anna Wilhelmina van Brienen van Ramerus (1811–1889) was the last member of this noble line. Quality and particulars RARE – R2 (PANNEKEET) The offered specimen shows local wear, particularly in the depiction of the knight and the Generality coat of arms. The main coin details, including the year 1694, the crowned Gelderland provincial arms, and the mint mark with the unicorn, are recognizable. The coin exhibits a gray silver patina with visible circulation marks and localized wear. A notable feature is the historic connection to mint master Johan van Brienen and his family arms, of which the unicorn serves as the mint mark on this issue.
