Envelop first day of issue Kaleidoscope 14 September 2020: The Kaleidoscope issue by Hansje van Halem fit into a new series for which PostNL commissions winners of prestigious design competitions to design stamps. They may be guided by their own interests, by what fascinates and moves them. In other words: their personal fascination takes precedence. The kaleidoscopic effects of reflected light have been described since ancient times. In modern times, methods and devices to evoke these effects in a controlled way have been experimented with with varying success. The kaleidoscope as we know it was invented in the early 19th century by the Scottish physicist Sir David Brewster (1781-1868). He patented it in 1817. Brewster coined the word kaleidoscope, derived from the Greek kalos (beautiful), eidos (form/shape) and skopein (to look). The kaleidoscopic effect is created by letting light in a tube reflect on colored objects via mirrors. The multicolored symmetrical patterns that result change when the tube is shaken. This creates optical illusions in which our eyes perceive something different from what our brains interpret. Visual deception, thus. Since the invention by Brewster, the kaleidoscope has fulfilled various functions: as a toy for children, as entertainment for adults, and as a source of inspiration for artists, jewelers, architects, and anyone involved in decorations and ornaments. This is envelope no. 812 of NVPH first day issue 14 September 2020 3., Stamp booklet Kaleidoscope 14 September 2020: On the same date as under 3, a stamp booklet with stamps by Hansje van Halem was issued.
