Netherlands 1946 - Sluis envelope "National Relief...

Envelope with NVPH 449-453 postmarked on the first day of issue 01-05-1946, described and with an open flap. The "SLUIS" first day covers series consists of 27 envelopes from the Netherlands and four from the Dutch East Indies. This is the 25th envelope in the series issued by Mr. S.J. Sluis. The series starts in 1935 and runs through 1946. In 1935 two envelopes were issued, "Summer" and "Child", both in editions of fewer than 10 pieces. In 1936 the editions grew larger. Number 25 has an edition of fewer than 10 pieces. In 1945/1946 the last three envelopes were issued. All with editions of fewer than 10 pieces. Mr. Sluis was needed in the family business. Compared with the E numbers issued by the NVPH, the editions are small. Most with addresses were sent to business associates in America. The Sluis family has been in vegetable seeds since 1878. The envelopes were issued and printed in-house; the family had its own print shop for advertising purposes. Mr. Sluis can be regarded as the pioneer of the E-number series issued by the NVPH since 1950. No postage costs.
