New York, David Zwirner, 2021. In “Die Klasse” (The Class), Neo Rauch distils the tension between familiarity and enigma that has characterised his work for decades. The title evokes a place of learning and collective formation, yet leaves open whether it refers to a group of people, a teaching situation or a broader social context. This ambiguity is characteristic of Rauch’s visual language, in which familiar situations lose their clarity and resist any definitive interpretation. Unlike his often large-scale, densely populated compositions, the smaller format of “Die Klasse” offers a concentrated entry point into his multilayered visual world. The confined pictorial space resembles a window onto an independent reality, creating an intriguing contrast with the conceptual breadth of the scene. Rauch brings figures and narrative elements together in constellations that recall different art-historical traditions without submitting to any single reading. The figures appear united within a shared scene, yet remain enclosed within their own spheres of action. At times, their gestures seem frozen in a moment of suspension. Neo Rauch’s work is closely connected to the East German tradition of figurative painting. As a leading representative of the New Leipzig School, he achieved international recognition. Nevertheless, his painting resists any clear art-historical classification. Echoes of Socialist Realism and the European pictorial tradition coexist with a dreamlike, at times almost surreal imaginative world. Historical figures, different eras and futuristic fragments appear side by side without apparent transition. The result is a pictorial reality in which past and present, memory and imagination intertwine. Rauch’s paintings do not illustrate a fixed narrative. Instead, they stage an interplay of historical allusions, objects and figures, in which the present appears as a layering of different temporal dimensions. The familiar becomes strange, while the improbable seems entirely natural. Viewers become witnesses to an unfolding scene whose underlying circumstances and consequences remain uncertain. Rauch’s understanding of the painting process reflects this openness. He describes the emerging image as an independent organism whose internal dynamics help shape the artistic process. Memory, intuition and painterly decisions interact without the logic of the image being reducible to conscious construction alone. “Die Klasse” exemplifies Rauch’s ability to create conceptual openness within a confined pictorial space. Rather than offering a definitive resolution, the work invites repeated contemplation, through which relationships and meanings continually shift. IS
