Fascinating and rare set of 21 small original illustrated cards tied to the famous Jogo do Bicho, the historic “animal game” born in Brazil at the end of the 19th century. The cards are presumably datable between the late 1800s and the early 1900s and are gathered on a single support. They are likely produced by chromolithography, a refined color printing technique in which the different tones were obtained through successive lithographic impressions. They will be shipped without a frame on a rigid support. Note: the cards cannot be by J.J. Grandeville because he died in 1847, but by someone who copied him. Jogo do Bicho originated in Rio de Janeiro in 1892 at the initiative of Baron João Batista Viana Drummond, founder and owner of the city’s zoological garden. To increase the number of visitors, the baron devised a lottery in which each number was associated with an animal. Participants received a ticket depicting one of the various animals and could win a prize if the figure matched the drawn one. The game quickly spread beyond the zoo’s borders and into the popular neighborhoods of Rio de Janeiro, becoming one of the most well-known and deeply rooted forms of gambling in Brazilian culture. Bets were collected on the streets, in small shops, and in common gathering places of the working classes. This set preserves 21 of the traditional figures of the game. The animals are transformed into striking anthropomorphic characters, dressed as men and women of high society of the era and engaged in theatrical, musical, or everyday activities. They are recognizable, among others: * the ostrich, “Avestruz,” depicted as an eccentric character with an umbrella; * the eagle, “Águia,” portrayed as an elegant female figure; * the donkey, “Burro,” in the guise of a musician; * the butterfly, “Borboleta,” transformed into a dancer; * the dog, “Cachorro,” playing the cello; * the goat, “Cabra,” in a theatrical scene; * the ram, “Carneiro,” depicted while reading; * the camel, “Camelo,” represented as a harper; * the rabbit, “Coelho,” accompanied by small dogs; * the horse, “Cavalo,” elegantly dressed; * the elephant, “Elefante,” seated at a desk; * the rooster, “Galo,” with an umbrella; * the cat, “Gato,” in the guise of a musician; * the caiman, “Jacaré,” depicted as a designer; * the monkey, “Macaco,” in dark suit; * the turkey, “Peru,” represented as a person of rank; * the peacock, “Pavão,” in regal attire; * the bull, “Touro,” transformed into a percussionist; * the tiger, “Tigre,” while playing a instrument; * the bear, “Urso,” portrayed in bed; * the stag, “Veado,” elegantly seated outdoors. The illustrations display a typically fin-de-siècle satirical and caricatural taste, with humanized animals, refined clothing, musical scenes, and humorous references to the society of the time. The golden background is particularly elegant, enhancing the colors and giving the whole a remarkable decorative impact. The traditional system of Jogo do Bicho includes 25 animals; this sheet preserves 21 cards. The cobra, lion, pig, and cow are missing. Precisely the presence of Portuguese names and the numbering clearly links the figurines to the famous Brazilian popular lottery. Overall dimensions of the sheet: 21 cm in height × 26.5 cm in width. Dimensions of each card: about 7 cm in height × 3.5 cm in width. The cards show evident signs of time, marginal wear, small losses, creases, abrasions, irregularities, and surface alterations, as detailed in the photographs. Despite their age and use, the images retain pleasing colors and an extraordinary expressive power.
