Neapolitan School (XIX), signed “Consalvo Carelli' - Landschap met figuur

Italian Alpine landscape with figure – Neapolitan School, 19th century Atmospheric 19th-century Italian mountain landscape in oil, with imposing rock formations, vegetation and a small figure in red in the foreground. The loose, expressive brushwork and atmospheric treatment of the sky and the landscape give the work a characterful and romantic appearance. The painting bears a handwritten signature lower left read as ‘Consalvo Carelli’. The work is classified by Catawiki as “Neapolitan School (XIX), Bears Signature ‘Consalvo Carelli’”. It is thus offered as a work from the Neapolitan School of the 19th century, with a Carelli signature, and not as a definitively authenticated work of Consalvo Carelli. The painting measures approximately 40 × 50 cm. Including the richly decorated wooden frame it measures approximately 48 × 58 cm. Upon removing it from the frame, edges reveal remnants of canvas. The work appears to have originally been painted on canvas and later attached to a wooden/plywood support. The current support shows some slight warping. Condition The paint layer visually appears to be in good condition. The wooden frame shows clear signs of age and use and damage. Additionally a piece of ornament is missing from the upper right corner of the frame. The frame is therefore explicitly offered in used and damaged condition, appropriate to the age of the work.
