Mother figure with two children, Yoruba people, Nigeria, 20th century

Descriptio Carved wood. Dimensions: 41.5 × 14 × 13 cm. Yoruba ritual sculpture representing a mother with two children, a symbol of fertility, protection, and family continuity. These figures (Ibeji or Ere Iya) were part of domestic shrines dedicated to motherhood and were venerated as intermediaries between the living and the ancestors. The figure is characterized by its verticality, the symbolic power of the pose, and the idealized features typical of Yoruba art. The surfaces show a ritual patina acquired through contact and the offering of oils during ceremonies. Provenance: private collection. Lot in international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipping: no import duties apply. An export permit from the country of origin may be required. Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, no specialized technical testing has been performed. The absence of any mention of restorations does not guarantee that none exist. You may request additional information before placing a bid. This does not affect the buyer’s statutory rights.
