About the artist In the history of jazz, Miles Davis left a giant imprint. As a child, when he receives a trumpet as a gift, he does not yet know that it will change his life. He falls in love with this instrument and over the years becomes a true virtuoso. From the start of his career, Miles Davis encounters great names on the American jazz scene, but he does not settle for merely Miles Davis was born on May 26, 1926, in Illinois, United States. His mother, Cleorita Henry, played violin and piano, and he was immersed in a musical world from a very early age. Shortly before ten, he receives a trumpet as a gift. This marks the beginning of a passion and, above all, of a tremendous career. At 13, he begins taking lessons and by 1942 he launches into a professional jazz career. From 1944 to 1948, he mainly plays with bebop groups and builds a solid reputation that allows him to join Charlie Parker’s quintet, replacing Dizzy Gillespie in October 1945. He begins to taste success, but longs to create his own style. Thus, in 1948 he forms a nine-member group and explores cool jazz, a new musical movement. From 1949 to 1955, another stylistic shift. Miles Davis experiments with hard bop. Musically, things are going well, but the trumpeter battles drug addiction. He eventually overcomes it and, in 1955, he forms a legendary quintet with John Coltrane (tenor saxophone), Philly Joe Jones (drums), Red Garland (piano), and Paul Chambers (bass). Miles Davis establishes himself definitively as a jazz icon. Always seeking novelty and able to capture the spirit of the times, he does not hesitate to embrace the electric revolution in the late 1960s. Due to health issues, he withdraws in 1975, before returning in 1981 for a new decade of success. He ultimately passes away on September 28, 1991. The American singer and trumpeter leaves a deep mark on the history of American jazz.
