Mid-Century Nautical Desk Set with Thermorecord Thermometer

Mid-Century Nautical Desk Set with Thermorecord Thermometer

Beautiful and highly decorative Mid-Century nautical desk set, dating approximately from the 1950s–1960s, combining a working Thermorecord thermometer and an elegant sailing ship on a substantial rectangular marble base. The composition is strongly inspired by the world of navigation and maritime exploration. The most striking element is the large stylised compass rose, or wind rose, whose radiating points form an architectural frame around the centrally mounted thermometer. The design immediately recalls traditional nautical instruments and compass cards, transforming an everyday measuring instrument into a particularly attractive decorative object. At its centre is an original Thermorecord thermometer, with an elegant black dial, contrasting numerals and gilt-coloured hand. The temperature scale is indicated in degrees Celsius and ranges approximately from -20°C to +60°C. The thermometer is in perfectly working condition. Completing the composition is a beautifully modelled three-dimensional sailing ship, executed with considerable attention to detail. The vessel features raised sails, rigging, mast and a textured base representing the movement of the sea, reinforcing the strongly maritime character of the piece. Both the compass rose and sailing ship have an attractive aged bronze/gilt finish with a naturally developed vintage patina. The variations and wear to the finish are entirely consistent with the age of the object and contribute considerably to its authentic character. The two elements are mounted on a substantial natural marble base, whose warm grey, beige and reddish-brown tones are crossed by dramatic contrasting white veining. Each marble base is naturally unique, making it an integral decorative element of the composition rather than merely a support. Nautical motifs became particularly popular in European decorative arts and desk accessories during the post-war period. Sailing ships, compass roses, globes and navigational instruments evoked travel, exploration and internationalism and were frequently used to decorate offices, libraries and executive desks. This example is particularly appealing because it combines these maritime symbols with an actual functional instrument. A charming and unusual vintage desk sculpture and functional thermometer, ideal for a study, library, office, nautical interior or collection of Mid-Century desk accessories. Period: circa 1950s–1960s Style: Mid-Century / Nautical / Maritime Materials: natural marble and patinated gilt/bronze-tone metal Thermometer: Thermorecord, Celsius scale, working Dimensions: approximately 15 × 11 × 6 cm The piece is preserved in attractive vintage condition, showing normal age-related wear and an authentic patina to the metal surfaces, as clearly visible in the photographs.
