[MERCIER (Louis-Sébastien)]. Dreams of a Hermit. At the Hermitage of St. Amour, 1770. In-12, red morocco leather, triple gilt fillet, small metal finials at the corners, coat of arms in the center, smooth decorated spine, green title label, interior roulette, lining and endpapers of gilt-patterned paper, gilt edges (contemporary binding). First edition. The author, a writer and Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s most fervent disciple, is best known for his astonishing narrative entitled *The Year Two Thousand Four Hundred and Forty*. *The Dreams of a Hermit* is written in the same vein and contains 36 dreams, each as curious as the next: in one of them, for example, he imagines becoming an antique dealer and finds himself face to face with a mummy, while in another his dream turns into a nightmare as he finds himself on an island where the inhabitants feed on human blood! Label of Maillet, Engraver and Bookseller under the name of Mr. A. G. Hardy... With the coat of arms of Louis de Bourbon-Condé. Stains on pp. 71–72. Very slight scuffing on the binding.
