MEDIEVAL HOUR BOOKS. Paris, Gruel - Engelmann, 1862. Square 12mo, brown morocco leather, double gilt rule, geometric motif in relief on the covers bearing the gilt inscription “Seek and you shall find / Knock and it shall be opened to you,” chiseled metal fleurs-de-lis at the corners, four roundels in the center, studded metal reinforcements at the corners, chiseled clasp, spine decorated with double gilt fillets forming panels, inner wheel, blue moiré lining and endpapers, blue edges with gold fleur-de-lis motifs (Gruel). A very beautiful missal printed in chromolithography by Engelmann and Graf in the style of medieval books of hours, illustrated with a full-page painting, 13 illuminations, and numerous borders around the text adorned with interlacing patterns, scrollwork, candelabra, flowers, historical scenes, etc. At the end, 8 blank pages for recording family memories. Binding signed by Gruel. Slight rubbing on the top cap.
