Medieval Bronze Shemesh Solar Rosette Brooch – Jewish Solar Symbolism – Radiant Sunburst Design – ca. 12th–15th Century AD Object Type: Solar Rosette Brooch / Decorative Brooch Culture: Medieval European – Jewish Solar Symbolism Date: ca. 12th–15th Century AD Material: Bronze Technique: Cast, with High-Relief Decoration Form: Circular Radiating Solar Rosette with Scalloped Outer Edge Decoration: Central Solar Disc, Radiating Raised Rays and Beaded Ornaments Height: 37.64 mm ± Width: 37.72 mm ± Weight: 17.33 g ± Description A distinctive example of medieval bronze craftsmanship, this remarkable solar rosette brooch is distinguished by its powerful radial composition, prominent central boss and richly executed ornamental details. The circular body is framed by a scalloped outer edge, while pronounced raised rays extending from the centre, interspersed with small rounded projections, create an impressive sunburst design. The Hebrew term Shemesh (שמש), meaning "sun", establishes a cultural connection with the solar symbolism found in ancient Jewish artistic traditions. Solar representations appear prominently in the synagogue mosaics of Hammat Tiberias, Beth Alpha and Sepphoris, where they form significant elements of compositions expressing celestial order and the cyclical passage of time. The brooch's pronounced central disc, radiating relief elements and rhythmically arranged beaded ornaments display striking formal similarities to solar iconography found throughout medieval artistic traditions. Its sculptural surface, substantial bronze construction and richly varied historical patina further enhance the object's distinctive character. -All items are shipped fully insured.
