[Mazarinades[ - Le Babillard du Temps 1649 - 1649

The Babillard du Temps en Vers burlesques, 1649. I am selling a rare Fronde journal, The Babillard du Temps, 1649, six numbers of 8 pages each. Complete publication issued during the siege of Paris. No 1: “Since I am named Babillard I will not spare anyone/ I am under and filled with wine/ I want to speak of Tabarin/ Tabarin this little sailor/ This man is perverse and unjust/ Who has neither God nor Faith nor Law/ Who has abducted our King/ And made our City sit/ Like a wicked and clumsy man/ By the great Princes of Condé/ Who have instantly enchanted him/… It is Condé who will not listen/ This day neither rhyme nor reason/ And who in some houses/ Has had fire and flames set/ Is it not a great disgrace for him/ To allow his soldiers/ Like thieves and raiders/ To strip men in their shirts/ And steal the Church’s Goods/ Violate women and young girls/ Doing civilly indecent acts/ Such as Turks and barbarians… Mazarin has come in post/ But they have closed the door on him/ Saying frankly/ We do not want his chatter/… No 2: I want to speak of Gratelard/ This valiant champion La Rivière/ Who knows well the way/ How Mazarin should be treated/ Making his snout blush/ With fists more than four/… Everyone runs to the markets/ The midwives of a cabal/ Show little bread/ To cry out in hunger/ To obtain it we keep quarreling, we slaughter each other… No 3: I will tell of a great change/ That arrived recently/ Friday the world swears/ Some shout, others murmur/ They say they want bread/ But the Baker, too cunning/ Says he has no flour/ Whence the people grow pale/ And they say they will stun/ Those who do not give them any/… We do not want Mazarin/ Especially since he has a cunning mind/… Others fearing the siege too much/ Say he will stay in Liège/ In Modena or Piombino/ Wherever he wears his domino/ His hat and his scrip/ Not very light for a man/ Having with his unheard-of deeds/ Amassed much Louis/… No 5: God will grant us grace/ To vanquish those who mean ill/ In Paris and the Cardinal may boast and say/ He must die a martyr/ Thus Nostradamus foretold/ And the great Poluphémus/ In three or four centuries… Let us speak of the Prince of Conty/ Who is endowed with valor/ With beauty and grace/ … Every day he goes to the works/ With the other generals/ Works hard, quickly/ To the lines and the saps/ To prevent our enemies/ From doing what they promised/ To that devil Cardinal/ Who is worse than a horse/… For truly the Duke of Longueville/ Has a very fine army/ Which is lodged today/ In Rouen inside the faubourg/ And they go forth to take their march/ To march up to the Pont de l’Arche/…" ** At the end of No 2, the author indicates that the Reader should buy only the Babillard printed at La Vigne. There are probably counterfeit copies. *** If disturbances break out in the provinces at Rouen, Bordeaux and Aix-en-Provence, if the Parliament of Paris has managed to neutralize the municipality and the prévôt des marchands, the siege of the city is nevertheless effective. The grain stores around Paris no longer feed the city and the price of bread quadruples in two months. The Charenton battle won by the royal army on February 8, 1649 against some Frondeurs prevents any relief. The king’s soldiers ravage the south of Paris. La Rochefoucauld is wounded in the throat by a gunshot during a engagement at Brie-Comte-Robert… * Port with declared value for the Postal Service.

Estimation:€400
