Toutes les enchères / Ethnographie / Mauritia histrio (51 mm
Scientific name: Mauritia histrio (Gmelin, 1791) – in the German-speaking world known as the Theatre Cowrie, Harlequin Porcelain Cowrie, or History Cowrie. Origin & Localities: Western Indian Ocean; this superb specimen originates from the waters around the island nation of Mauritius. This provenance is highly valued among collectors, as specimens from this region often develop a particularly contrasting, dark brown to almost black shading at the margins. Habitat: Shallow coral reefs, lagoons and rocky tidal zones at depths of 1 to 10 meters. The animals live very hidden in crevices or beneath massive coral blocks and are predominantly nocturnal in order to graze on algal growth. Size & Preservation: 51 mm – An excellent, typical and fully mature size for this species. Condition GEM (Absolute Museum and pinnacle quality): A flawless specimen with a mirror-like enamel gloss on the dorsum, completely undamaged siphonal end and perfectly preserved, dark brown basal teeth. Free from any storage traces or growth defects. SKU Oberdiek Cypraea histrio 50
