Toutes les enchères / Art Contemporain / Mathieu Boessen (1912–1998) - Stilleven

Still life by Mathieu Boessen (1912–1998), executed in oil on canvas and signed and dated ‘M. Boessen 37’ in the bottom right. The work thus dates from 1937, an early period in his oeuvre. The canvas measures approximately 40 × 50 cm; including the broad, heavily modeled frame about 48 × 57 × 4 cm. Boessen groups apples, pears, lemons, and green and dark grapes around a light-coloured goblet, a dish, and a green-glazed jug. The objects occupy almost the entire picture plane and are depicted from a light elevated viewpoint. The dark background and deep brown- and greenish tones are punctuated by the yellow of the lemons, the reddish-brown fruits, and the light reflections on the goblet and grapes. The paint handling is sturdy yet nuanced, with short visible brushstrokes and carefully built light accents that give volume to the fruits and the dishware. The subdued tonalities and compact composition confer the still life with a distinctive pre-war character. Biography of the artist Matheus Henricus Andreas Hubertus (Mathieu) Boessen (Roermond, 1912–1998) was a Limburg painter and draftsman who remained closely connected to Roermond throughout his life. He began as a house and decorative painter and developed his artistic skills initially through drawing instruction and further study. From 1932 he trained in the studios of Roermond artists Jules Rummens and Leo Franssen; in the academic year 1943–1944 he also took lessons from Gé Röling at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam. From the end of the 1930s Boessen developed his own figurative painting style, in which portraits, self-portraits and still lifes occupy a place in his oeuvre. Works by Boessen are in the collection of the Roermond Foundation 1880, including a documented self-portrait from 1943.
