Mathematics, Wardington copy.- Taylor (Michael) Tables of logarithms of all numbers, from 1 to 101000; and of the sines and tangents to every second of the quadrant, first edition, list of subscribers, tables, errata to final verso, title foxed and creased, occasional spotting or mostly light foxing, lightly browned, contemporary lightly diced calf, gilt, sympathetically rebacked, corners repaired (bumped), rubbed and marked, marbled edges, [Tomash & Williams T17; ESTC T146693], large 4to, Printed by Christopher Buckton, Great Pulteney Street; and sold by Francis Wingrave, Bookseller, successor to Mr. Nourse in the Strand, 1792. *** First edition of this important set of tables, with an excellent provenance. Taylor (1756-1789) was a mathematician for the Nautical Almanac. The work includes a preface by the eminent English astronomer Nevil Maskelyne (1732–1811), who succeeded Bliss as Astronomer Royal. A distinguished subscribers list includes Herschel, Cassini, Sir Joseph Banks, and 'Mr. Harrison' (likely John Harrison of Longitude fame). Provenance: Christopher Henry Beaumont Pease, 2nd Baron Wardington; Christopher William Beaumont Pease (bookplates to rear and front pastedown); Thomas Forster, 1806 (bookplate in pen and ink to front free endpaper).
