[MARTIAL D'AUVERGNE]. LIII Arrêts d’Amours. Aresta amorum. Rouen, Raphaël du Petit Val, 1587. A substantial volume in small 8vo, printed on contemporary vellum. A Rouen edition of the scholarly commentaries by Benoît Le Court, a jurist and renowned bibliophile, on the *Arrêts d’amour* by the poet and jurist Martial d’Auvergne (c. 1430–1508). This edition contains 53 “love rulings,” pieces that describe, in the form of fictional legal rulings, the mores of the time regarding romantic feelings and relationships. The 53rd judgment occupies the last 15 folios of the volume, preceded by a table of contents and an “Ordonnance sur le fait des masques” (pp. 888–899). Handwritten ex-libris on the title page: Le Meusmer. Handwritten notes on the last leaf. Title page is damaged and partially doubled, with missing letters. A few stains and water stains; the endpapers are slightly trimmed. A printing defect on leaf FF2, which is in two pieces. The volume is bulging, with the quires protruding.
