Marten Toonder Studio's (Jan van Haasteren) - 1 Original...

Original drawings from Marten Toonder Studios have always been extremely rare, and that can and will never change. On December 1, 2010, the cultural legacy of Marten Toonder (all the work that Marten Toonder himself created) was officially transferred by his heirs to the Dutch State and has since then been the property of the Netherlands. In November 2018, the archive of Marten Toonder Studios was donated to the Literature Museum in The Hague and the Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam. See the last photo. The chance that original drawings will come onto the market has therefore become very small. General; Jan van Haasteren began his career at the advertising agency Grijseels, after which he took a position at Nijgh & Van Ditmar. Jan worked as an assistant to Loek van Delden on the comic Smidje Verholen, marking his debut as a comic strip artist. His career as a comic artist only really got going when Jan started working at the Marten Toonder Studios. Jan made a move to Geesink Studio, where he worked in the Geesink Artists department on Rick de Kikker. He also continued to work as a freelancer for Toonder Studios. In 1967 he switched to freelance work and worked from home. Jan contributed to strips such as Kappie and Tom Poes. He also drew many strips for Donald Duck, including the Boze Wolf, Donald Duck, Ketelbinkie, and Hiawatha. His own work began to come more to the fore at that time as well. Jan collaborated with many people and drew a great many strips and advertising posters. His work is extensively described in the book “Jan van Haasteren: From Comic Artist to Puzzle Phenomenon.” In 2006 Jan was honored by Het Stripschap with the ‘Bulletje en Boonestaak Schaal’, and in 2013 he was knighted as a Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau. For the comic magazines Sjors and Eppo, Jan brought Tinus Trotyl to life. Tinus Trotyl has a morbid love for explosions; one of his characteristic lines is: ‘No words, but bangs.’ The strip is regarded as one of the first Dutch family comics. The strip led Jan to start drawing posters, which ultimately led to the world-famous Jan van Haasteren puzzle posters. The strip; Aafje Anders is a Dutch newspaper comic from the Toonder Studios, conceived and written by Andries Brandt. The strip was drawn by Jan van Haasteren and later by the British artist Robert Hamilton with Richard Klokkers for the backgrounds. The strip concerns the adventures of the eighteen-year-old Aafje who lives in the rural and somewhat dull Mikkum with her inventive grandfather. Aafje constantly tries to see if things can be different. Her efforts to drive away boredom pose a serious threat to the rural calm. The stories largely take place in Amsterdam. The strip was the successor to Horre, Harm and Hella. The newspaper De Telegraaf had asked the makers of that strip to replace it with something more light-hearted. Unlike Horre, Harm and Hella, Aafje Anders is not a text strip but a comic with speech balloons. Original work by Jan van Haasteren is rare and is rarely offered. Auction info; This lot contains a stunning original pencil page of Aafje Anders from the early 1970s. The sketch sheet is fully developed and ready to be inked. It showcases the artist Jan van Haasteren’s craftsmanship in pure form. This is very rare material of which virtually nothing has survived and thus nothing is in circulation. Before this beautiful page is offered, it has been in a private collection for more than 45 years. A unique opportunity for the connoisseur. See also the photos which are part of the description and give a good impression of the quality of what is offered. The drawing will be very well packed and sent by registered mail to the new owner."
