Toutes les enchères / Livres, Cartographie & Manuscrits / MAROT (Clément). The Works. Paris, Printed by Estienne Mesvi - Lot 41

MAROT (Clément). The Works. Paris, Printed by Estienne Mesvière for the widow of Françoys Regnault, 1551. In-16, contemporary binding in fawn calfskin; on the covers, a double frame of cold-stamped fillets with gilded fleurons in the corners and, in the center, a cold-stamped motif consisting of the crowned monogram of Henry II surrounded by a quiver and two intertwined crescents; spine with raised bands, cold-embossed with fleurons and cherub heads. A lovely and rare Parisian edition of the Works of Clément Marot. A precious copy bearing on the covers a stamp featuring the emblems of Henry II and Diane de Poitiers. This same iron stamp appears on a binding with a very similar design covering a copy of Geoffroy Tory’s *Heures de 1527*, which appeared in the Descamps-Scrive sale (I, 1925, no. 26) with the following description: “The binding features fleurs-de-lis on the covers at the four corners and, in the center, a most curious emblematic monogram composed of a crowned H, two crescents, and a quiver. Like its former owner, the Nancy-based bibliophile de Beaupré, we believe that this copy was bound for Henry II and Diane de Poitiers.” The stamp is also reproduced in the OHR armorial (2488, stamp no. 7), which attributes it to Henry II. Stamp of François Regnault with a slight blue highlight on the title page. At the top of the same title page, a 16th-century handwritten bookplate: *Sum Joannis Brombuleri, ex dono Martini Stapfer*. Spines and corners skillfully restored. Spine lighter in color. Handwritten inscriptions and signatures from the period on the verso of the last leaf. From the libraries of Count Roger Portalis (with bookplate; not listed in auction catalogs) and Grace Whitney Hoff (1933, no. 65). Acquired by Émile Rossignol in 1960. Brunet, III, 1456; Meyer, Bibliographie des Œuvres de Clément Marot, Geneva, 1954, no. 186; Olivier, Hermal, Roton. Manuel de l'amateur de reliures armoriées françaises, 2488.
