Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) is one of the undisputed masters of Art Nouveau and a fundamental figure in the history of decorative modern art. His instantly recognizable style, characterized by elegant female figures, flowing lines, ornamental halos and rich botanical motifs, has become synonymous with fin-de-siècle Paris and the rise of graphic art as a collected discipline. Mucha's works enjoy lasting international demand, with high prices for posters, lithographs, and decorative panels, which appeal just as much to fine art lovers, design enthusiasts, and interior stylists. This first commission for the celebrated actress Sarah Bernhardt and her “Théâtre de la Renaissance” established Alfons Mucha’s reputation as one of the leading representatives of Art Nouveau and a master of decorative prints. The poster, innovative in form and artistic conception, caused a great deal of excitement. The dominant subject of the almost life-size image of the actress in her role as “Gismonda” fascinated the public with its noble form and rich colors. The work was inspired by the ceremonial procession in the final act of the play by Victorien Sardou. The pathetico pose, the magnificent dress reminiscent of liturgical vestments, the symbolic palm leaf, and the suggestion of a halo evoke medieval or neo-Gothic style. The background, based on Byzantine models and constructed as a mosaic, contributes to the sacred atmosphere, an aura that not least reflects the almost cult-like veneration that Sarah Bernhardt, as muse of the Belle Époque, fell heir to and her elevation to a kind of “secular saint.” The success of the collaboration with the actress provided Mucha with an exclusive contract, which lasted six years and coincided with the flourishing of Art Nouveau.
