MANGBETU ANTHROPOMORPHIC TERRACOTTA VESSEL

Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ca. early 20th century AD. > A sculptural terracotta vessel in the form of a stylised human bust. The composition is built upon a rounded, globular body from which rises a long, elegantly proportioned neck supporting a sensitively modelled head. The face is rendered in three-quarter orientation, with softly defined features - almond-shaped eyes, a straight nose, and a slightly projecting mouthconveying a composed, introspective expression. The coiffure is indicated by a smooth, pulled-back form with subtle incised banding at the crown, suggesting stylised hair arrangement. > > Size: 250mm x 130mm; Weight: 1.31kg > Provenance: Prince collection, 1990s-2014. > >
