Magnificent Pendant Brooch with Matching Chain with Emeralds & Diamonds

The jewellery of the 1930s returned more to the history of the goldsmith's art than the cool and modernist design language of the 1920s had done. With the new decade, the pieces of jewellery became more voluminous, and here and there the one or other reminiscence of the Biedermeier period or the Renaissance was mixed in with modern forms, as a symbol of the "good old days". This piece of jewellery is a fine example of this renewed desire for rich decoration. Its design refers to the neo-Renaissance of the 19th century in the so-called Holbein style. It is staggered and symmetrical; a flower with eight petals of white enamel and diamonds lies very elegantly on an inward and outward swinging base with blue decoration. The center is occupied by a shining emerald, raised once again by eight further gold elements that look like petals. The pendant can also be worn as a brooch. The loop at the top can be unhooked for this purpose. The necklace was most likely made in the USA and was probably later combined with the pendant made in Germany: Both match each other perfectly in terms of their color and rich shapes. The workmanship in high-carat, heavy yellow gold and white gold and the cuts of the stones leave no doubt that the necklace is a child of the 1930s. And yet it is completely modern, despite all the references to the past: it is a nostalgic look back to a nostalgically transfigured past that was typical of the time in which it was created.
