Magnificent mask - Songye - DR Congo (No reserve price)

Male masks are known for their distinctive exaggerated shapes. Aggressively shaped with protruding eyes, jutting mouths, and powerful crests, the masks of the ancients embody the greatest potential and the greatest strength. The dynamic shapes symbolize the level of power, or rank, of the masked character. Used for social control, political action, or the solicitation of contributions and protection, they were danced at important funerals, visits, and inaugurations.
