Magnificent Aquamarine & Diamond Gold Bracelet, German, c. 1950s

This bracelet is a magnificent sight. In the center we see a large, luminous aquamarine in a step cut. The stone has an impressive, intense colour and is set in yellow gold. To the right and left, staggered arches of diamonds in platinum echo the shape of the aquamarine and lead on to the bracelet itself. This is created using a special technique: It is flexible, similar to knitwear, yet soft and comfortable to wear. The bracelet is designed as a three-dimensional Milanese braid. Milanaise braiding is still mainly used today for watch straps, but it is machine-made and always only as a flat weave. The incomparably more elaborate, hollow braiding of this strap, however, is made by hand. It is soft and comfortable on the arm, yet stable and reliable. The bracelet bears the "Lotos" manufacturer's mark, which was registered by the Philipp Döppenschmitt company in Pforzheim back in 1872. Milanese work was one of the company's specialties. At the beginning of the 20th century, small ladies' handbags made of gold mesh were produced. From the 1920s until around 1965, Lotos also produced necklaces and bracelets using this technique. The design and workmanship allow us to date the bracelet to around 1950. During the years of the economic miracle, the company enjoyed its greatest success with bracelets like this one. The design language is still clearly based on the "retro jewellery" of late Art Deco. In later years, the company shifted its focus to the production of high-quality spectacle frames. We discovered the bracelet in Hamburg. A detailed appraisal has confirmed the quality of the materials used.
