Pieces of jewellery—like other decorative accessories—are always subject to fashion trends. What’s cutting-edge today seems old-fashioned just a short time later. This presents a dilemma when the item that’s gone out of style is a precious piece that was expensive to purchase. So what should you do? Often, jewelry does not fare well when fashions change: the expensive gemstones are set in new pieces, while the original goldsmith’s work is melted down. Sometimes, however, the redesigns are more subtle—as is the case with this bracelet. A water-blue aquamarine in a square step cut forms the centerpiece of this extraordinary piece of jewellery. Eighty diamonds with a total weight of approximately 2.25 carats adorn the links, crafted entirely of platinum; these links are connected in a flexible manner to form the magnificent central section. At first glance, one might think: A wonderful bracelet from around 1930, a quintessential Art Deco jewel! But upon closer inspection, one realizes that this diamond-set bracelet, with its beautiful gemstones, originally began its life as a wristwatch. It was likely redesigned at a later date—perhaps when its wearer could no longer read the overly small dial, or when large watches came into fashion and the delicate “little watches” fell out of favor. The new center stone was cut to fit and now blends perfectly into the piece. Bracelets made of knitted, high-karat white gold have replaced the black silk straps. With its cool, elegant, geometric design, finely crafted proportions, delicate milgrains on the surface, and the lavish brilliance of its numerous diamonds, this piece of jewellery is a true testament to the heyday of Art Deco. At the same time, its fascinating history of redesign serves as a reminder of the rapid change in fashions—and that it is still worth preserving beauty in one way or another.
