Luis Graner Arrufi (1863-1929) - Retrato de anciano con gorro rojo

• Subject and clothing: It shows a three-quarter bust portrait of an elderly man from a traditional rural Catalan setting. His identity is highlighted by the use of the barretina, the characteristic red woolen cap that falls slightly to the side. He also wears a cloak or thick jacket in dark, brown tones, with a wide collar and a reddish lining matching the headdress. • Facial features and expression: The face reveals advanced age through marked wrinkles, bushy eyebrows, and a dense beard with a gray mustache. His gaze is thoughtful and nostalgic toward the right side of the frame, conveying a deep sense of dignity, serenity, and the sobriety typical of life in the countryside. • Style and color: Framed in the pictorial realism of the late 19th or early 20th century, Graner applies loose, impastoed, and expressive brushstrokes, faithfully capturing the textures of skin and fabrics. The strong contrast between the vivid reds and the earth tones of the background and clothing stands out, wrapped in an atmosphere of soft, focused light that recalls the influence of classical masters.
