Louis XVI (1754-1793), King of France, & Alexandre Marie Léonor de Saint-Mauris-Montbarrey (1732-1796), Secretary of State for War. Commission for the rank of colonel of cavalry. P.S., 3 June 1778, 1 page in folio (300*490 mm) on parchment (animal skin). Fragment of a seal bearing the arms of France. Louis XVI's signature is that of a secretary. Montbarrey's is autograph. Commission requiring that the second lieutenant Louis-Edmond, viscount de Menou du Mée (1750-1829) be treated with the rank of colonel of cavalry. These documents concerning the Gendarmerie companies are rare. Indeed, the Ordonnance Gendarmerie counted only about fifteen companies, and eight remained on the eve of the French Revolution. Being part of it was a rare honor, and quite often the officers who were lowered in rank by joining it.
