Toutes les enchères / Arts Graphiques / Louis Haché - 1 Original page - Louis Haché...

This original pen-and-ink board by Louis Haché fully illustrates his work as a realistic and didactic comic-strip artist, particularly important in the early part of his career. Before devoting himself more to painting, Haché worked as an illustrator, graphic designer and advertising artist, while collaborating on several publications, notably Tintin, La Libre Belgique and Éditions du Lombard. The presented board is devoted to Jean-Baptiste Charcot and traces several notable episodes of his life, from his involvement during the First World War to his later polar explorations. The narrative first recalls his passage before the British Admiralty, then his return to France to participate, in Nantes, in the construction of buildings intended for the anti-submarine warfare effort. Several panels then depict his patrols at sea and a confrontation with an enemy submarine, underscoring his role as mariner and officer during the conflict. The second part of the board returns to Charcot's career as an explorer after the war. The man whom Robert Falcon Scott had nicknamed the “gentleman of the Pole” resumes his scientific campaigns in northern regions, notably Greenland. The narrative ultimately leads to the wreck of the Pourquoi-Pas?, which occurred in September 1936 off Iceland, a tragic episode that marks the end of Charcot's life. The final panels, devoted to the storm, the violence of the waves and the destruction of the lifeboats, give this part of the board strong dramatic intensity. The graphical work bears witness to Haché's taste for documentary precision. The uniforms, ships, maritime equipment, submarines and sailing scenes are rendered with particular care. The stark contrasts of pen-and-ink reinforce the tension of the sea scenes, while the alternation between portraits, deck views and broad maritime compositions gives the narrative a sustained rhythm. This board also illustrates Haché's ability to condense a complex biography into a sequence of immediately legible episodes. Military engagement, scientific exploration and the final shipwreck are thus united in a narration that is at once historical, documentary and dramatic. This articulation between graphical precision and pedagogical vocation is one of the important characteristics of his work for the press and illustrated publications of the era. In 2025, several original boards by Louis Haché have, moreover, joined the collections of the Museum of Comic Art in Brussels, contributing to the patrimonial recognition of this Belgian artist whose career extended from comic strips to illustration and painting.
