Limbach - Coffee pot - Porcelain

Limbach - Coffee pot - Porcelain

A rare large and early piece of Thüringer porcelain from the renowned Porzellanfabrik Limbach, founded by Gotthelf Greiner. This monumental coffee pot is executed in the classic ribbed pear-shaped form and entirely hand-painted in underglaze blue with the refined Strohblumenmuster (strawflower decoration). With an impressive height of 30 cm and a weight of 1,408 g, this is the largest size pouring pot (Riesenkaffeekanne) from this early service. What makes this example exceptional is the covered pouring spout with the original factory-formed heart-shaped pouring opening (herzförmiger Ausguss). This typical 18th-century design – directly adopted from contemporary metalwork – was intended to keep coffee grounds out and ensure a tight pouring jet. Where this delicate bridge/bridgework is damaged, ground down, or restored on almost all preserved pots, this pouring opening remains in its original, fully glaze-surviving state. The accompanying ribbed lid with an acorn knob and deep inner seat is also completely intact and sits perfectly with the cannelure pattern of the body. Marked on the bottom with the hand-painted crossed L mark in underglaze blue. This mark was used exclusively between 1772 and 1788, before Meissen objected to the resemblance to their crossed swords, after which Limbach switched to the cloverleaf mark. Specifications Manufacturer: Porzellanfabrik Limbach (Thüringen, Germany – Johann Gotthelf Greiner) Dating: ca. 1772 – 1788 (early period with crossed L mark) Material: Hard porcelain (hard-paste), hand-painted in underglaze cobalt blue Decoration: Strohblumenmuster / Blaue Blume on ribbed ground Marks: Hand-painted crossed L mark in underglaze blue; blank impressed formers mark in the stand ring Height: 30 cm Weight: 1,408 g Condition: Excellent and pristine. No restorations, no chips, no hairlines. The delicate heart-shaped spout, stand ring, and lid knop are completely undamaged. A museum-quality and pristine reference piece for collectors of early 18th-century Thüringer porcelain art. Will be shipped with extreme care and shockproof packing.
