Very Beautiful, detailed painting by Lieutenant Colonel M. E. WOYARD in the exceptionally beautiful accompanying original antique frame/list. Nice signature "Leon Herbo (1850-1907)" and dated: May 8, 1893. The painting was offered by "La société des officiers de la 3eme légion". This is mentioned on the bronze plate at the bottom of the painting. The painting is an oil on canvas and in magnificent condition. The frame/list is also in magnificent condition, considering its age. Dimensions of the painting: 80 x 65 cm; without restorations or damages. The painting is in the original antique frame from 1893, in perfect condition, 106 x 91 cm. Certainly one of the better works by this Belgian artist. The photos are part of the description. Léon Herbo (1850, Templeuve - 1907, Ixelles) was a Belgian painter, best known for his portraits of women in informal poses and for his portraits of actors and actresses. He also painted genre scenes, often with Orientalist themes. His wife often served as a model. Biography: He studied at the Académie des beaux-arts de Tournai with Léonce Legendre, the director of the academy, and completed his studies at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels from 1869 to 1874. He achieved first place in the preliminaries of the Prix de Rome. He traveled through Germany, Italy and France before settling in Brussels. His first official exhibition took place in 1875 in the Brussels Salon, and he would continue to exhibit there until the end of the century. In addition to exhibitions in Belgium, he participated in shows in Paris, the Salon, Munich and Berlin. He received an honorable mention at the World’s Fair of 1889. In that same year he collaborated with the animal painter Alexandre Clarys on a monumental painting depicting the meeting of Queen Marie Henriette with the eponymous military squad. Above all, he became a portrait painter at a fixed price with guaranteed likeness. "His reputation was such that after his death he was often approached for portraits" (in Biographie Nationale published by the Royal Academy of Sciences, Letters and Fine Arts of Belgium (Volume 37 - pp. 432 & 433)). A good example is the portrait of the Belgian Crown Prince Leopold, Count of Hainaut, who died at ten years old in 1869, a portrait he painted for Queen Marie-Henriette. Herbo had a significant output as a portrait painter. Most of his paintings are in private collections. Some are on display in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, the Museum of Fine Arts and Sculpture in Kortrijk and the Musée des Beaux-Arts Tournai. Can be picked up in 3770 Riemst or shipped.
