LÉANDRE (Charles-Lucien) (1862–1934). - Lot 252

LÉANDRE (Charles-Lucien) (1862–1934). French painter, draftsman, lithographer, and caricaturist. A student of Émile Bin, Charles Léandre was one of the most talented caricaturists of the Belle Époque. A contributor to illustrated periodicals, notably *Le Rire*, he also distinguished himself as a portraitist and painter. He won a bronze medal at the 1889 World’s Fair and the Medal of Honor from the Society of French Artists in 1921. Autograph letter signed “C. Léandre” to an investigating judge. Paris, October 5, 1909. 2 pages, in-12 format, in black ink. The painter’s autograph address at the bottom of the second page: “ C. Léandre, 59 rue Lepic - Paris.” An interesting letter in which Charles Léandre requests a hearing with an investigating judge regarding a matter of personal concern to him, and asks to be accompanied by his business manager, a member of the Société des artistes français. The painter addresses the magistrate directly: “I have the honor, with the permission you have kindly granted me, to request a hearing for one of the days this week regarding the Schleminger case. ” He wishes for his business manager to be heard at the same time as him: “Could my business manager, Mr. Ch. Sebel of the Société des Artistes Français, who has all the notes pertaining to this case, be heard with me?” Léandre then specifies his availability, indicating that it would be easier for him to go to the judge’s office on Saturday morning, while stating that he is ready to go to the Courthouse on the date set by the judge. This letter serves as evidence of the legal proceedings initiated by Charles Léandre in 1909. In particular, it reveals the involvement of his business associate, who was connected to the Société des Artistes Français, and mentions a case whose exact nature remains to be determined. The inclusion of his personal address at 59 Rue Lepic in Montmartre provides additional documentary evidence of this artist’s roots in Paris, as he was closely associated with the artistic world of the Belle Époque. Condition: Generally good condition. Age-related creases, slight signs of handling, and a few small foxing spots. Handwriting is well preserved.
