Large San Girolamo - Palma el Joven. Jacopo Negretti, (Venice, c.

Descriptio Oil on canvas, dimensions: 156 x 104.7 cm. Framed dimensions: 180 x 130 cm. Provenance: private collection, London. (Venice, c. 1548-1628). Italian painter. With the gradual disappearance of the great Venetian masters of the 16th century, Jacopo Negretti became the city’s most prominent and renowned artist. He trained within his family, being the son of Antonio Negretti and the great-nephew of Palma Vecchio, and also spent a brief period in Titian’s workshop. He worked in Urbino at the invitation of Duke Guidobaldo, whom he had met in Venice in 1564. Also at the Duke’s behest, he later traveled to Rome, arriving in 1567, before returning to Venice in 1570. Although this Venetian sojourn must have been brief, his permanent settlement in the lagoon city did not occur until 1578, when he was commissioned to paint two works for the Hall of the Great Council in the Doge’s Palace. From then on, he absorbed, in a somewhat eclectic manner, the lessons of the great masters, particularly those of Tintoretto, adding to this an interest in drawing—an aspect that would become the most innovative element of Venetian painting at the turn of the century, and one from which it had traditionally been lacking. He was an exceptionally prolific artist, frequently sought after for a wide variety of public works by the ecclesiastical and political authorities of Venice. In them he demonstrated his talent for representing all kinds of subjects, effectively applying a series of learned schemes and formulations without any appreciable evolution in either his pictorial style or his models. Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, no specialized technical testing has been performed. The absence of any mention of restorations does not guarantee that none exist. You may request additional information before placing a bid. This does not affect the buyer’s statutory rights.
